Custom Cabinets vs. Stock Cabinets for Rhode Island Kitchens
Not long ago, we were doing a kitchen remodel in Rhode Island where the homeowner had already picked out stock cabinets.
The decision wasn't based on quality or on style either. The client actually looked at two numbers and picked the smaller one. Honestly, I understood his thinking, and most people would do the same thing.
In fact, the cabinets themselves were fine. However, the problem was the house.
One wall was not perfectly straight. The refrigerator opening was tighter than expected. The window over the sink sat in a spot that limited some of our layout options.
None of these issues were major by themselves. But together, they changed the conversation.
Nobody noticed any of this while looking at the cabinet displays.
Why would they?
A showroom cabinet doesn't have to deal with a hundred-year-old house.
Once we started laying everything out, it became obvious that fitting standard-sized cabinets into that kitchen was going to require compromises.
· Extra fillers
· Lost storage
· Dead space
That project ended up going in a different direction. Stock cabinets were not bad, it was the kitchen that lacked cooperation.
A cabinet that works perfectly in one kitchen can be the wrong choice in another kitchen ten minutes down the road.
That's especially true here in Rhode Island.
What Makes Cabinet Installation Different in Rhode Island Homes
I've been in enough homes to know that surprises are part of the job in Rhode Island projects.
You start opening walls and suddenly you're looking at the work of three different contractors from three different decades.
· We have found plumbing lines where nobody expected them.
· Electrical runs that made no sense.
· A wall that looks straight until somebody puts a level on it.
Homes in Rhode Island have character, but those quirks can affect nearly every decision during a kitchen remodel.
That's why I get nervous when somebody tries to make cabinet decisions based entirely on a showroom display.
The showroom doesn't know your floor drops half an inch across the room. The showroom doesn't know your house has been remodeled three times already.
The showroom doesn't know that somebody boxed in a pipe thirty years ago and stole valuable storage space in the process.
A cabinet company can manufacture a perfectly good cabinet. That doesn't mean it's the right cabinet for every kitchen.
Are Stock Cabinets the Right Choice for Your Rhode Island Kitchen?
A lot of remodelers immediately start pushing custom kitchen cabinets in Rhode Island, but I don't.
There are kitchens where stock cabinets make complete sense. I've recommended them plenty of times, when
· The layout is straightforward
· The cabinet sizes work with the room
The mistake happens when homeowners assume stock cabinets are automatically the best value simply because the initial number is lower.
I've watched homeowners save money on cabinet boxes and then spend part of those savings to work around limitations that showed up later.
Such problems are inevitable because standard products have standard limitations.
Before you place an order, let us take a look at the space. A free consultation can help you decide if stock cabinets make sense or custom cabinetry would be a better fit for the way your kitchen is laid out.
How Custom Cabinets Can Solve Common Kitchen Storage Problems
One family wants a baking station. Another family has enough small appliances to open a restaurant. Some homeowners buy groceries once a week. Others buy groceries once a month.
Everyone should make a list of requirements when planning cabinetry. At Darlington, we care less about the cabinet door style and more about how somebody uses their kitchen.
We take great care of the layout and utilize the corner that nobody can reach. We try to solve the problem of the overflowing pantry.
During site evaluation, we don’t miss those drawers that never close properly because too much stuff gets crammed into them.
Appliance Choices Change Everything
You can’t really separate cabinets and appliances. They work together, but homeowners often overlook this area.
· A larger refrigerator affects the surrounding cabinetry.
· A double oven affects storage.
· A microwave drawer affects the layout.
· A larger range affects countertop space.
We've had projects where a single appliance decision changed the entire cabinet plan. It's also one reason we like figuring these things out before materials are ordered.
Indeed, changes on paper are easy but making changes after cabinets arrive is not.
Comparing the True Cost of Custom Cabinets and Stock Cabinets
A homeowner sees two cabinet quotes. Naturally, they start with the one that is significantly lower.
Sometimes the lower-priced cabinet package works perfectly. Other times, there are modifications in the form of additional trim or extra fillers.
Maybe you need adjustments for storage upgrades, then your original savings start shrinking.
Again, this doesn't mean stock cabinets are a bad choice.
It means comparing numbers on paper cannot tell the whole story. The real comparison is what the finished kitchen looks like when the project is complete.
What Do I Recommend In My Own House?
People ask me this all the time. But the answer depends on the kitchen. If the layout is workable with stock cabinet dimensions, then I would not hesitate to use them.
But, if I had an older home with unusual dimensions and specific storage needs, I'd strongly consider custom cabinetry.
What I'd Tell My Own Brother
Stop looking at the door when comparing custom cabinets and stock cabinets.
You can find the sureshot answer in a minute just by:
Looking at the kitchen.
Looking at how you cook.
Looking at what frustrates you.
Looking at the storage problems you deal with every day.
A kitchen remodel is expensive enough that you don't want to spend years wishing you had made a different decision.
It is better to figure out what isn't working now and build a solution around it.
Still Trying to Figure Out Which Direction Makes Sense?
Bring us photos, measurements, and your ideas. We'll sit down and talk through the space.
Some kitchens are excellent candidates for stock cabinets, while others benefit from custom cabinetry.
Darlington never pushes you toward the more expensive options for cabinetry or countertops in Rhode Island. Our goal is to help you avoid spending money on the wrong one.
I'm usually in the showroom most mornings. If you want to talk shop, look at materials, and see how different cabinet options are actually built, stop by and let's figure it out together.
